The first pint of the first brew from a brand new craft brewery was pulled at the Clifford Arms, Shaldon on
6 March 2007.
The ruby beer, called Oarsome Ale, was awaited with great anticipation by an assortment of beer drinkers who had turned up for the event. The 4.6abv beer was well received, and I over-heard folk commenting on its smooth and creamy nature, and the hints of fruit and toffee flavours.
The brewer, Geoff Phillips, has set up a 1 barrel plant in Ringmore, and will be exclusively supplying beer to The Clifford for at least 6 months. He told me that he had been a brewer for Courage, prior to becoming a teacher, and since he has recently retired from his position of deputy-head, has gone back to his first
passion - brewing, and together with his wife Jill has formed this latest Devon brewery.
We can look forward to a straw-coloured summer beer called Rollocks (4.8 abv), and a 6.0 abv Christmas Ale with cinnamon, aptly called Ringmore Bells. He is also planning to release bottle-conditioned beers for special occasions, so if you want aspecial brew for a wedding or christening, he’s your man.
