Pub/Brewery News Update - Winter 2006-7

The Tom Cobley Tavern, Spreyton, Devon, has been awarded CAMRA National Pub of the Year 2006. Our sister club, Exeter and East Devon CAMRA  are delighted for the pub, and congratulations to them for choosing this winner as Pub of the Year 2006, for it to go on to win the national award.

Bickleigh Mill near Kingskerswell  with their log burning fires makes a lovely lunch time venue; not only does it serve exceptional good value food but at the last visit it was serving Teignworthy Neep Tide 3.8% and Otter Ale 4.5% in perfect condition on handpump .  Just the place to take your mistress!

On the 6th January popular licensees Kev & Fie left the Palk Arms at Hennock. They had a rousing farewell from a packed pub. They will be sorely missed by this small community. After a short period of being closed 'Gibb' is now behind the bar and holding the fort. He says that new managers Mark and Ree are on their way and hopefully will take up their duties in March or April.

The George Inn at Blackawton has a new look since Bob Clark took over in December.  Formerly a golf manager at Dartmouth Golf Club, but with previous experience in the licence trade he is enthusiastic about his new venture.  He finds the village a lovely place to live and is keen to build up the George as a traditional pub.  He also hopes to continue the traditional annual Beer Festival over the May Day holiday when Blackawton has its long-established Worm Charming Festival.

Will Freeland and Mark Salmon are pleased and extremely excited to announce that they will be opening Bays Brewery in Paignton with the first brew planned for May 2007. Construction work will commence in March at the home of Bays Brewery which is a 4000 square foot unit in Aspen Way. They will be installing a 20 barrel brew plant which will initially have the capacity of producing in excess of 400 casks per week.
Will has been the Head Brewer at Skinners Brewery in Truro for the last 10 years and has extensive experience in the business as well as an excellent reputation for producing first class award winning ale.
